How to get rid of an old refrigerator in Calhoun County

If it still works and you're a Consumers Energy electric customer, start with their appliance recycling program — free pickup and a $50 rebate for a working fridge or freezer of 10–30 cubic feet. If it doesn't qualify, have us take it in any condition: we handle the refrigerant, so you don't need it drained or certified first.

The short answer

Two ways that work: Consumers Energy's recycling program for a working unit, or Marshall Hauling for any fridge in any condition. The one that doesn't work is the curb — Marshall's and Battle Creek's bulk pickups both refuse Freon appliances.

Option 1

Still working? Consumers Energy appliance recycling

A $50 rebate and free pickup for working refrigerators and freezers, 10–30 cubic feet. It's for Consumers Energy electric customers, and the unit has to be empty and working.

Calhoun County collection days

The county runs collection days for household hazardous waste, electronics, scrap metal and scrap tires. Not every collection day takes refrigerators — some have turned away anything with Freon — so only bring one to a day the county's events page says accepts appliances.

Option 2

Any condition: we take it

We take it, and we handle the refrigerant - you don't need to have the unit drained or certified first, which most haulers make you arrange yourself. Working units in good condition go to local charities; the rest have the refrigerant recovered properly before the metal is recycled.

Freezer still full of food? Call us first. An emptied freezer is no problem - a full one after a power outage needs a plan. Pricing starts at $95, with the exact number before anything moves.

What won't work: the curb

Both city programs list Freon appliances among the things they won't take: the City of Marshall's spring bulk pickup and Battle Creek's curbside bulk items.
