Where to take junk in Calhoun County

Recycling goes to the C&C Landfill program in Marshall — free for county residents with a program card, except residents of the City of Albion, the City of Battle Creek, the City of Springfield and the Village of Tekonsha. In Marshall and Battle Creek, bulky trash goes out on the city's bulk pickup, and hazardous waste, electronics, scrap metal and tires have the county's collection days.

The short answer

Marshall runs one spring bulk pickup a year, 3 cubic yards at most; Battle Creek takes bagged bulk items at the curb on regular trash day, inside city limits. Neither takes Freon appliances, tires, electronics or hazardous waste. Tires, electronics and hazardous waste have county collection days; a Freon appliance needs another route, such as a hauler that handles the refrigerant.

What the city won't take that we will

City: no · Us: yes

Freon appliances

Yes, and we handle the refrigerant - you don't need to have the unit drained or certified first, which most haulers make you arrange yourself. Working units in good condition go to local charities; the rest have the refrigerant recovered properly before the metal is recycled.

Appliance removal

City: no · Us: yes

Yard waste

Yes. Brush, branches, storm debris and general yard cleanup.

Yard waste and brush removal

City: no · Us: yes

Drywall

Yes, both demo debris and leftover new sheets. Plaster and lath from older Marshall houses too - it is heavier than people expect, which is exactly why you call us.

City: no · Us: yes

Concrete

Yes. Broken concrete, asphalt and all kinds of demolition and construction debris. For heavy masonry, our junk-removal crew hauls it and the weight is our problem — call for a price before you plan it around a rental can.

City: no · Us: yes

Shingles

Yes. Shingles are dense - a single-layer tear-off on most houses fills our 10 yard dumpster by weight before volume, so tell us the square count and the layers and we will size it honestly.

City: no · Us: yes

Tires

Yes — on a junk removal pickup. Tires come up on nearly every garage cleanout, and we take them so we can handle the disposal properly. They can't go in a rental dumpster, though — set them aside and we'll grab them on a junk pickup instead.

Tire disposal

Electronics and TVs

All kinds. Working equipment is donated to neighbors who need it. Broken or outdated gear goes to a Michigan recycling station for disassembly. We don't wipe or destroy hard drives, so remove or wipe any drives first.

Yes, including the old projection sets. Working ones get donated, the rest go to a Michigan handling station for recycling.

Electronics disposal

City: no · Us: yes

Hazardous waste

Yes - the garage-shelf collection of cleaners, pesticides and pool chemicals that stops most haulers. Tell us what you have when you book so it rides safely and ends up handled properly.

Yes, once it's hardened - liquid paint can't ride, but a can firmed up with paint hardener or kitty litter goes with everything else. Haven't dealt with it? We'll harden it for you for a small additional charge.

The one thing we send back to the county is fuel and oil: fuels and oils have to go to a household hazardous waste site. Calhoun County runs collection days for exactly this.

Questions

Disposal, answered.

Most of it goes to licensed transfer stations in Battle Creek, Jackson and Kalamazoo, and to the landfill in Marshall - that is the honest majority. Roughly 10% is diverted: usable goods donated to There's Enough (Marshall and Albion), Habitat for Humanity and Thrift by Volunteers of America, metal to the scrapyard, and electronics to Michigan handling stations.

The city won't take it? We probably will.
